When re-counting dreams to myself or others, I often employ some form of the word “sudden” — “all of a sudden my mom appeared” or “suddenly it was daytime when it had been night all along.” Yet within the dream space itself, nothing feels sudden. All is fluid and states shift easily. It is only in the retelling, staring down the tube of the conscious-rational mindset, that the changes in dreams seem abrupt. Context determines suddenness. I wonder what it would take to see in reality that same kind of fluidity. Is such perception what lies behind the spiritual sage’s quiet smile?
